Kentucky fires football coach Joker Phillips
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky football coach Joker Phillips knew after Saturday’s embarrassing loss to Vanderbilt that keeping his job would be tough. The end came a day later.
Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart announced Phillips’ firing Sunday in an open letter on the Wildcats’ web site. The letter stated Phillips would be let go, effective at the end of the season, but athletic department spokesman DeWayne Peevy later said the coach’s status for the final two games was still to be determined.
Ferrer beats Janowicz to win Paris Masters
PARIS — Fourth-seeded David Ferrer beat qualifier Jerzy Janowicz 6-4, 6-3 Sunday in the Paris Masters final for the biggest win of his career and ATP tour-leading seventh title of the year.
He had lost twice to Rafael Nadal and once to Andy Murray in his previous Masters finals — but he didn’t have to face a Grand Slam winner this time.
That didn’t make the victory any less special.
As soon as he clinched the win, the normally unflappable Spaniard collapsed to the court, lying face down as he screamed in jubilation. He then sprinted over to hug his coach and girlfriend in the stands.
Petrova beats Wozniacki to win WTA final
SOFIA, Bulgaria — Nadia Petrova stunned top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-1 to win the Tournament of Champions on Sunday, clinching her third title of the year.
The second-seeded Russian broke Wozniacki twice in each set, taking control from the beginning through her booming serve and groundstrokes.
Wozniacki had a medical timeout during the second set and is looking forward to a break.
“It did not go very well for me today. Now I will go on vacation to recharge the batteries for next season,” she said.
